Alef is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet and has the numerical value of one. The number one is kabbalistically used to represent G-d, Creator of Heaven and earth.
The form of the Alef is composed of two letters: two yuds and a vav. The top yud represents G-d, the lower yud represents the Jewish people, and the vav is the connector between the two: the Torah.
The combination of these letters also represents potential forms of Divine love, imagined as bodies of water: a passionate and turbulent love and a calm and assured love.
Alef is the first letter of the first of the Ten Commandments: “I am the Lord, your G-d, who took you out of the Land of Egypt.”
Alef symbolizes the spiritual process of the exile in Egypt, the consequent redemption, and the receiving of the Torah, literally bringing Heaven down to Earth.
